How To Build a Portfolio As a Content Writer Using Medium or Quora.

In yesterday’s post I wrote about how you can build your portfolio as a content writer. I mentioned three ways to build a solid portfolio. 1. Writing on Medium 2. Doing Internships 3. Starting Own Blog. In today’s post I will dig deeper into how you can use Medium to build your portfolio.

The biggest reason why beginner content writers fail to get clients is the lack of portfolio. If you are reaching to a client and you don’t have anything to show as your past work. Then it is very less likely that you will get hired. That’s why I strongly recommend everyone starting their writing career to have a portfolio.

Most beginner freelancers have a common problem: how can they build their portfolio if they don’t have any clients to work with. The answer to their complaint is finding a way for it. You can’t just complain, sit and relax. If you are serious about your writing career you will have to take action. There are social media publishing platforms like Medium, Quora which you can leverage to create a portfolio.

  • Medium: The first platform I recommend everyone is Medium. It is a very popular social publishing platform with 100 Million monthly active users. You can create an individual account or a publication on Medium for free. There are no charges involved whatsoever. Once you have your Medium account ready, start publishing content in your niche regularly. If your content is good it will start getting traction on Medium reaching active users. Once you have a few articles published there you are ready to start reaching clients. When they ask for your previous work, share the link of your Medium author page. If they ask why Medium. You can honestly answer it by saying you didn’t have any opportunity to write on a website so I have written it on Medium. If your content is as good as a normal article site owners publish on their website there is no way the client will disagree to not give you a try. Once you get the opportunity, utilize it, provide a sample article that your client didn’t find any reason to not hire you. Medium also has a monetization platform which is available in many regions. So, if your content starts getting traction on Medium so you can also make some money from there as well.

  • Quora: Other than Medium one platform you can also use is Quora. You must have visited Quora to get answers for a question. Now is the time to use it as a way to build your portfolio. Join some spaces on Quora within your niche. There are many users asking questions on Quora. What you have to do is start answering those questions. You can go into more detail as possible. Make those answers like a blog article. Similarly write some answers there. When you reach a client they ask for samples you can share your Quora profile along with the Medium profile. The hiring manager will have a sufficient amount of write ups to make a decision. Alike Medium, Quora has also launched its monetization program. If you create a space within your niche, answer questions and your answer gets views then you can also get some revenue from there.

Whenever a beginner asks about building a portfolio this is the strategy I share with them. There is nothing wrong in publishing your content for free on Medium or Quora. Something is better than nothing. You will have a few links to share with your clients. So stop reaching clients without a portfolio. Use these platforms, build a portfolio and then reach clients. You will definitely succeed. I hope you find this useful.
