How I Started My Tech Media Brand TechYorker

· 3 min read

This is how I started my Tech Media brand TechYorker.

In yesterday’s post, I promised to share the story of starting my first Tech media brand TechYorker. So here I am.

While creating tech content for my YouTube channel, I came across many channels. I found that some of them are individual creators, and some are media businesses.

I started digging more into those Tech media startups. I found they are full-fledged media businesses. Their primary property is their website, and YouTube is just an extension. I started liking this approach to creating Tech content.

As I wrote yesterday, my personal YouTube channel and blogs were not monetized. I thought to reset everything I had done so far and do something new.

Within the next few days, I started working on building a Tech media business with a brand name instead of my name.

The next challenge was to build a team. I discussed the idea with two friends: Ankit and Bhanu Pratap (I met him online).

Interested to know how I met Bhanu? While struggling on YouTube, one of my online friends, Prem, sent me the link to a channel named Mr. V. I commented on one of his videos and gave some random suggestions. He replied and agreed with my suggestions. We exchanged our numbers and brought up that conversation on WhatsApp.

Coming back to our main story, I asked both of my friends if they could help me publish articles on the website. As I was planning to publish content in English, I was still determining if they would be comfortable with it. Thankfully both got agreed.

Now the next step was to think of a brandable name. I used to visit other Tech sites to stay updated with the latest tech. The name of some of those websites was TechCrunch, TechRadar, TechAdvisor, etc. So, I thought having Tech in the name would hint that it is a Tech site.

I started looking for the domain name, but most good ones were already booked. However, I had one such name in my mind but was skeptical about it. I shared the name with both of my friends, and they also liked it. So we finally agreed and confirmed the name TechYorker on 23rd October 2018.

The next day on 24th October, I booked the domain name from GoDaddy for only 125 Rupees. The next requirement was web hosting. I purchased a shared web hosting on 26th October, costing me about 100 Rupees for the first month.

Next, I installed WordPress on it, and the site went live. I had already purchased the Newspaper theme. I used the same theme on TechYorker, and the site was all set by the 27th.

Bhanu wrote the first article on 28th October. I still remember it was a news article about WhatsApp bringing stickers on its platform. I started writing on 1st November. My first article was about the Top Upcoming smartphones in November 2018.

So, this was how I started TechYorker, the first brand under my Media business Yorker Media.

In the upcoming posts, I will share strategies I followed to grow it to 170k monthly page views by March 2019. So, please stay tuned for that.
