Growing TechYorker From 0 to 170k Page Views in Four Months
This is how I grew the traffic of my first Tech media brand from 0 to 170k page views in just four months.
In the previous post, I shared the journey of starting TechYorker. In today's post, I will share exactly what I did to grow the traffic in 4 months.
I was inspired by old Tech blogs when I started the project. These sites used to cover all the latest tech happenings. I also decided to cover the latest tech news.
So I started publishing tech news. But as a small team, the biggest challenge was covering the news on time. The big blogs were always ahead, and once the news was already covered by 100s of publications.
Still, I was trying my best. I used to follow the tech industry so well that I could publish the news even before the major publications. My articles were getting ranked on the first page for a few minutes. But once the competition came, they were moved to the 2nd and 3rd page. However, I kept trying it for the first month.
After doing it for a month, I realized this would not sustain the project. So I started thinking about what I could do in Tech that no one else was doing.
Initially, I tried writing smartphone comparisons. Then I tried writing the best apps article. Nothing was working out.
One day I found news about a Smartphone launch in China. When I was about to cover that, I found it had a new SoC. I searched for that SoC, but no information was there on the Internet.
I immediately published an article explaining the SoC. When the article ranked, we saw some visitors in real-time.
Next, I compared that SoC with some of its near competitors. I published one comparison and saw visitors coming to the page then I followed with more such comparisons.
That day was 25th December 2018; for the first time, my site received 328 visitors organically.
Now I had discovered a niche that had almost no competition. After it, I started publishing SoC comparisons on our site.
First, I compared the already launched SoCs and then started waiting for new SoCs to arrive. When a new SoC was launched the very same day, all the comparisons were done on my site.
Similarly, we covered one SoC Exynos 7904 in January 2019. Later that month, on 29th January, Samsung launched some smartphones with that processor. That day we received over 5500 visits to our site.
We started planning for upcoming smartphone launches. On 28th February 2019, our site received over 15000 visitors that day.
Following the same path, TechYorker received 1 Lakh 23 Thousand visitors in March 2019 with total page views of 1 Lakh 70 Thousand.
These numbers were enough for me to understand that a new blog can grow initially by covering things no one else is doing.
If you have also started a blog and are struggling to get traffic. I suggest that you keep experimenting to find that gap within your niche.
That's all for now. In the next post, I will share the mistakes I made that led to a sudden drop in my traffic. So please stay tuned for that.
Thanks!
