Individual Content Creators vs Media Businesses
You should be aware of this fact before starting your content creation journey.
In yesterday’s post, I summarized everything I had explained so far in my posts. I also made the announcements of a series of posts in which I will write about making money online by doing individual content creation. Today is the first post of that series, and in this one, I will talk about a basic fact you should be aware of before you start creating content on the Internet.
We are going through an information edge where content is easily accessible. If we have to divide all the content available on the Internet based on its creators, then we can divide it into two parts.
- First: Content created by media and entertainment businesses.
- Second: Content created by individual creators.
Since the inception of the media and entertainment industry, only businesses have been creating content. It was difficult for an individual to get into content creation. There was no such platform, but with Web 2.0 and the growth of Blogging and social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube, the average human got the tools to create content.
We started seeing individual content creators creating great content and becoming a celebrity. The popularity roses even higher in the last decade or so. The current situation is no matter what an individual profession is; they want to become a content creator. That’s how we now have both media businesses and individual creators.
I explained the differences between both the spectrum because before you start your content creation journey, you should know whether you will be doing individual content creation or media business. Many get confused because they don’t even know that both are different things and take different approaches. Some even think of individual content creation as running a media business.
What I think there is a clear difference between both. As an individual creator, you will create content around your experiences and skills. It is your writeups, text, and videos that people will relate to. You can’t just start creating content around something you don’t know. At any given point, you should be available to create content. You can hire some staff for tasks like video editing, thumbnail design, etc., but ultimately, you will face the camera.
At the same time, media businesses operate differently. Media businesses own several web properties in every niche, from Tech, Gaming, Finance, Health, and whatnot. They work with a team of hundreds of Individuals. They can scale things to a much greater extent. Most importantly, media businesses have a valuation. A media company can flip its web properties. Something that is not possible for an individual creator.
There is nothing wrong with each approach. Most importantly, a content creator should be aware of this fact. If someone wants, they can run a media business while doing individual content creation. But it would be best if the self-content creation is not mismatched as a business.
That’s all I wanted to write in the post. I hope you guys will get a clear understanding and know these differences before you get started as a content creator.
What are your thoughts about it?
Thanks for reading.
Have a great day!
