How to Quote Clients So You Don't Get Underpaid

· 3 min read

In my yesterday's post I wrote about a simple strategy of working with international clients to earn more as a content writer. I hope you guys will try implementing it and increase your international clientele.

When reaching clients one problem beginner content writers always have is quoting the client. Many new content writers gets confused here and ask for a very low pay. The clients happily gets agreed and they end up getting underpaid.

So that's why in today's post I will write about how should you discuss the payments terms or quote the client to get the most amount from a client so you don't get underpaid.

There are basically two suggestions that I have for all of you.

  1. Ask your client budget first
  2. Quote a higher rate

Ask Your Client Budget First - The first suggestion I have is ask your client budget first. Many content writers make the mistake of quoting their rates first. And in that situation, too, they quote very low pay. I always ask my client’s about their budget. I have realized, often, by not asking clients for their budget, writers end up quoting a lower pay than what the client could have paid. However, Don’t ask a client more than twice if they are not revealing their budget and asking for you to quote your charges. In that situation use the second suggestion I have.

Quote a Higher Rate: If your client is asking you to quote them and not giving you their budget then while quoting always ask for a reasonable rate. I have seen writers quoting very low just to get work, and they end up getting underpaid. First understand the client, how big they are whether the content is for a publication or they will be using it for content marketing. Generally if the content is used for content marketing then the client have a higher budget. Always consider the factor that if it is a domestic client or an international client from the United States or United Kingdom. Generally, clients from these countries have a higher budget. For domestic clients you can ask up to $0.05 per word. For international clients you can quote your rate as $0.10 per word. In most occasions they will get agreed.

This is what I was talking about. Now imagine what if you had quoted them just $0.02 per word they would have happily get agreed and you could have end up getting paid just $0.02 per word instead of $0.10.

That's why it becomes important to either ask your client's budget or quote a reasonably higher rate to leave some room for negotiations.

That's what I wanted to share with you guys. I hope you guys will implement these suggestions and never get underpaid for your work.

Thanks for reading.

Have a great day!
