Fresh Domain vs. Expired Domain: Which One Should You Get?
Fresh Domain Vs. Expired Domain: Which one should you get for your new blog?
In my yesterday’s post, I explained how you can select and buy a domain name for your blog. I hope you guys now have a better understanding of domain names, and you should be able to register a good domain name for your blog.
Back in the days when someone decides to start a blog, the process of deciding the domain name was doing some research and buying a completely new domain name.
Even I did the same when I started my Tech media brand TechYorker I went with a fresh domain name. However, over time, most good domain names are already booked.
If you come up with a domain name idea and search for it on a domain registrar, chances are that it will be already booked. So, if you are starting a blog in 2023, coming up with a good domain name is a real challenge.
To combat with this situation, some people try to good domain names from domain investors on platforms like Godaddy Auction, Dan, and Flippa.Com, but usually, buying domain names in this way is very costly.
The other popular way to get a good domain name is by buying an expired domain. What I think buying an expired domain makes more sense than buying a domain name from a domain investor. That’s the reason, in last few years, the craze of expired domains has grown a lot.
I first came to know about expired domains when I saw a new website outranking my Blog TechYorker. When I researched more about that site, I found that site was built on a 20-year-old expired domain.
If you have been following the Blogging industry in the last couple of years, you must have heard about a blog called MPNRC which was started on an expired domain.
That blog started getting 10M+ visitors within just a few months of starting the project. It was possible because the blog was built on an expired domain.
It was a clear indication that expired domains have an edge in search engines, and thousands of bloggers have started using expired domains for their new projects. So why is there so much craze around expired domains? Let me explain.
When you buy an expired domain, there are two benefits you can get:
- You can get a good domain name: As you are buying an expired domain, you may get a good domain name.
- Some expired domains come with a really solid backlink profile: The main reason why bloggers are excited about expired domains is some of the expired domains come with a really solid backlink profile.
If you could find an expired domain with relevant links in a niche. You can either redirect the domain to your existing project or start a new project altogether. It may give you an edge in rankings.
As I have shared with all of you, I also couldn’t resist myself from jumping on this expired domain bandwagon. I purchased six expired domains worth 250k Indian Rupees. I started projects on three of those domains, and two of them are doing very well. I have got Mediavine approval on them.
So, I think I am the right person to talk about expired domains. In tomorrow’s post, I will go much deeper into expired domains, so stay tuned for that.
That’s it for this post.
Thanks for reading. Have a great day!
